EDEN HOTEL COLLECTION BUYS BOVEY CASTLE, DARTMOOR

-Major investment planned at iconic 64-bedroom country estate-

Leading luxury boutique operator Eden Hotel Collection has announced the acquisition of the 64-bedroom Bovey Castle estate in the heart of Dartmoor National Park.

Eden Hotel Collection is a privately-owned group of luxury hotels across the Midlands, the Cotswolds and the South West. It has bought the award-winning Bovey Castle for an undisclosed sum and is planning a major investment in the country house estate, which today includes an 18-hole championship golf course, spa, country lodges and an outdoor pursuits centre.

The deal follows hard on the heels of an announcement in April of the company’s £13.5m planned investment in the 35-bedroom Tides Reach Hotel in Salcombe, South Devon. The site will be redeveloped to create a 50-bedroom luxury beachfront hotel and spa.

Commenting on the Bovey Castle deal, Eden Hotel Collection’s Managing Director Mark Chambers said he was thrilled by the opportunity to restore the hotel to its former glory and to re-establish it as the principle resort in the South West. Around £2m will be spent on renovation and improvements.

“Bovey Castle is a key acquisition for the group and will add to our existing properties in Somerset, Kingsbridge and now Salcombe. It establishes us as a major force in the hotel and tourism sector across the region.

“Restoring this iconic hotel and its estate is an exciting project for our team. This famous property has a national and international reputation for excellence and we are very much looking forward to cementing its place as the jewel in the crown of the leisure industry in the South West,” said Mark.

He added: “We are delighted to expand further into the South West, where our parent company, The Rigby Group plc, already has strong business links through its ownership of Exeter Airport, British International Helicopters (BIH) and SCC the international technology company.

A core value of Eden Hotel Collection is to integrate into the community, building links with local businesses, suppliers and people and the group is keen to make a positive impact on the local economy in Devon and the surrounding area.

Eden Hotel Collection is part of The Rigby Group plc. Formed in 1975, The Rigby Group is the parent company for a portfolio of privately owned and highly successful businesses operating across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

CHEF ADAM CLINCHES BATTLE OF EDEN TITLE

Adam Brown, the award-winning head chef at Brockencote Hall Hotel near Kidderminster, has clinched another culinary trophy.

Just days after Brockencote Hall, part of the Eden Hotel Collection, was awarded three prestigious AA Rosettes in the 2014 AA Restaurant Guide, Adam has won the third annual Battle of Eden title after going head-to-head with six other talented chefs.

Seven exquisite dishes, each created by a chef from a different Eden hotel, were served to 120 guests at Mallory Court Hotel, near Leamington Spa, on October 4.

Eden’s Food and Beverage Director, Simon Haigh, introduced and explained each course without revealing its creator and, at the end of the evening, guests were asked to vote for their favourite.

Adam clinched the title for the second year running with his carpaccio of venison, with flavours and textures of autumn. He was presented with his trophy by Eden Hotel Collection owner Sir Peter Rigby. His prize included use of a BMW for a weekend, an overnight stay at a top London hotel and dinner for two at a Michelin star restaurant in London.

Adam, who also scooped Visionary Chef of the Year with Visionary Dining earlier this year, describes his cooking style as ‘very, very natural, free flowing and not too conformed’.

He often forages Brockencote Hall’s 70-acre estate for wild ingredients to use in his menus, and regularly makes use of fruits growing in the grounds and honey produced in the hotel’s eight bee hives.

“I believe in the purity of flavour. If you put something in your mouth with your eyes closed, you should be able to tell what it is,” says Adam, who has worked in a number of Michelin-starred restaurants, including Restaurant Gordon Ramsay.

“I’m proud to be bringing the Battle of Eden trophy back to Brockencote Hall,” adds Adam. “Food is at the heart of what we do here and we are always looking at exciting new combinations and innovative techniques.”

Second place at the Battle of Eden went to John Footman, head chef at Mallory Court Hotel, for his roast aged fillet of beef, pan-friend ceps, truffles croquet and red win jus. Third place went to Ted Ruewell, head chef at Buckland Tout-Saints Hotel in Devon, for his chocolate cremeux, popcorn ice cream and chocolate soil creation.

Simon Haigh said: “The event had been highly anticipated thanks in part to our fun YouTube film, which gave everyone a taste of what was to come, and this year’s competition once again produced some outstanding dishes.”

AWARD-WINNING CHEFS BATTLE IT OUT FOR TITLE

Guests at Mallory Court Hotel were taken on a culinary adventure last week as seven award-winning chefs went head-to-head in a gastronomic battle.

The hotel near Leamington Spa, part of the luxury Eden Hotel Collection, welcomed 120 diners on October 4 to sample seven exquisite dishes in the collection’s third annual Battle of Eden. Each dish was specially created by a chef from a different hotel.

Eden’s Food and Beverage Director, Simon Haigh, introduced and explained each course without revealing its creator and, at the end of the evening, guests were asked to vote for their favourite.

In a hotly-fought competition, Adam Brown, head chef at Brockencote Hall Hotel in Worcestershire, clinched the title for the second year running with his carpaccio of venison, with flavours and textures of autumn.

Adam was presented with his trophy by Eden Hotel Collection owner Sir Peter Rigby. His prize also included use of a BMW for a weekend, an overnight stay at a top London hotel and dinner for two at a Michelin star restaurant in London.

Mallory Court’s own head chef, John Footman, came second with his roast aged fillet of beef, pan-friend ceps, truffles croquet and red win jus. Third place went to Ted Ruewell, head chef at Buckland Tout-Saints Hotel in Devon, for his chocolate cremeux, popcorn ice cream and chocolate soil creation.

Simon Haigh said: “This year’s Battle of Eden produced some outstanding dishes which once again showcased some exciting flavour combinations and innovative techniques.

“The event had been highly anticipated thanks in part to our fun YouTube film, which gave everyone a taste of what was to come.

“On the night itself we had a live Twitter feed on screen so that everyone could interact as guests deliberated on the winning dish. It was a real buzz – within the first hour we had hundreds of tweets coming in from guests and staff who couldn’t make it on the night!”

Brockencote Hall Triumphs in AA Rosette Restaurant Awards 2014

The restaurant at the 21-bedroom hotel, in Chaddesley Corbett near Kidderminster, has been awarded three AA Rosettes in the 2014 AA Restaurant Guide – one of the organisation’s most prestigious accolades for food, with just 10% of the restaurants listed in the Guide holding three Rosettes and above.

Brockencote Hall has also won AA Inspectors’ Choice / 4 Red Stars for accommodation. The AA identifies the highest performing hotels in Britain as the Inspectors’ Choice, denoted by Red Stars. This is the supreme honour, used to recognise hotels that stand out as the very best.

Brockencote Hall is part of the Eden Hotel Collection, seven upmarket boutique hotels located across the Midlands, the Cotswolds and the South West.

In July 2011 Eden bought Brockencote Hall and its 70 acres of leafy parkland from private owners who had spent years converting the Victorian mansion into a hotel. It closed for a six-week refurbishment, with a total investment approaching £6m.

General manager Dean Gunston said: “The team at Brockencote Hall are absolutely delighted to have won these AA awards. Since reopening last year, our aim has been to restore Brockencote Hall to its former glory and create a classic, high-end dining and accommodation destination for both local residents and visitors to the county.”

For head chef Adam Brown, winning three AA Rosettes is a personal triumph. He brings considerable experience to the job, having worked in sister hotel Mallory Court’s Michelin-starred restaurant as well as Restaurant Gordon Ramsay.

He says: “Food is at the heart of the Eden Hotel Collection and at Brockencote Hall we are always looking at exciting new combinations and innovative techniques. We firmly believe in seasonality and provenance and source the finest ingredients from our well-stocked kitchen gardens and bee hives as well as from local suppliers.”

The next challenge for Adam Brown is defending his title in the Battle of Eden competition in October, when the group’s seven head chefs compete to win over the hearts, stomachs and votes of their guests for the honour of being crowned top chef.

The AA awards cap an amazing 2013 for Brockencote Hall. After winning Hotel of the Year at the Worcestershire Welcome Awards, followed by Adam Brown scooping Visionary Chef of the Year with Visionary Dining, the hotel recently received a Highly Commended in the Visit England 2013 Awards for ‘Small Hotel of the Year’.

With seven properties each offering a different style and character, the company has laid down a standard which will ensure corporate guests enjoy the best business experience at whatever hotel they choose.

In a further boost for the company’s fast-growing corporate business, each of the hotels is now AIM accredited, further underlining Eden’s commitment to improving standards.

The new Eden Hotel Collection conference standard includes:

•             A dedicated conference co-ordinator to deal with every aspect of your booking, be on hand throughout the event and follow up within three days to ensure total satisfaction

•             Responding to all enquiries within two hours and providing a proposal, including costings with no hidden extras, within four hours

•             A range of extras provided, no matter which conference package is chosen. Warm pastries will be on offer when you arrive and unlimited tea and coffee will be available throughout your stay. •             A traditional sweet shop is provided for any delegates needing a sugar boost during the event, while everyone will be sent on their way with a parting gift for the journey.

AIM, which is endorsed by Visit Britain and the Association of British Professional Conference Organisers among others, is a standard that distinguishes quality meetings, conferences and events venues.

“AIM is a highly-respected brand which means that all our hotels and facilities have been thoroughly and professionally assessed to ensure they meet the stringent criteria set down,” said Mark Chambers, Managing Director at Eden Hotel Collection.

“AIM accreditation gives conference organisers and buyers the confidence to book an event knowing they will receive the best possible service.”

EDEN HOTEL COLLECTION GOES GREEN WITH 50% INCREASE IN RECYLING

The Green Team are in full force at Eden Hotel Collection, with a strategy to significantly improve environmental measures across their seven luxury hotels.

Eden Hotel Collection’s operations team began discussions with SITA UK in early 2012, with the idea of a group contract for all seven hotels in mind.

SITA UK is a recycling and resource management company dedicated to protecting the environment, employing ground-breaking initiatives such as converting plastics to diesel fuel.

The hotel group, as with any savvy business, were looking into cost savings by partnering with a recycling company and this gave them the opportunity to manage and monitor waste management in a much more structured and environmentally conscious way.

All seven hotels are now recycling food waste in addition to plastic, cardboard paper and glass.

Statistics from SITA show that as the hotels have more than doubled recycling across the group from 23% to 48% in May 2013.

Josefine Blomqvist, Operations Manager at Eden Hotel Collection, commented,

‘We are delighted that we have been able to reduce our waste across the group by such a significant amount. Protecting and conserving our environment is a responsibility that we take very seriously at Eden Hotel Collection and we are pleased to be doing our bit’.

Eden Hotel Collection now aims to maintain and fine tune current practices in order to increase recycling even further to 60% by the end of 2013.
