The eighth edition of Battle of Eden brought cinematic flair to Bovey Castle this year, as chefs from across Eden Hotel Collection transformed iconic blockbuster films into extraordinary fine dining creations.
For one night only, guests were treated to Battle of Eden 2026: A Night at the Movies, an immersive culinary event where each course paid tribute to a famous film. Five chefs from across the Eden Hotel Collection created dishes inspired by their chosen movie, with guests invited to vote for their favourite.
The evening opened with a playful nod to Ratatouille, featuring Highland wagyu beef tartare with aubergine purée, datterini tomato, barbecued courgette and piccolo pepper.
From Paris, the journey continued across the seas with a course inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean. Guests enjoyed pan-seared hand-divided scallops with cauliflower, white asparagus crisps and a delicate squid ink tuile.
The third course paid tribute to The Deer Hunter, showcasing Devonshire red deer Wellington with textures of English roots, venison ragout parcel and a rich venison jus.
Next came a bold and playful interpretation of Pulp Fiction, with a Royale with Cheese featuring brioche, iced onion parfait, Wookey Hole cheese, walnuts and a Bloody Mary element.
And then came the grand finale.
Inspired by the magical world of Willy Wonka, the winning dish was a theatrical interpretation of a Snickers bar. The dessert combined whipped peanut parfait, chocolate bark, dulce de leche and popcorn ice cream, delivering both nostalgia and indulgence in equal measure.
In true Battle of Eden tradition, the chefs remained anonymous until the final votes were counted. When the winner was revealed, the title went to Bovey Castle’s Executive Head Chef, Mark Budd, who has led the kitchens at Bovey Castle for more than 11 years.
Speaking after the announcement, Mark said:
“It feels great to bring the title back to Bovey Castle for the first time since 2015.
The competition was extremely high with some amazing dishes, but I was in my home kitchen and I loved channelling my inner Willy Wonka, so I always backed myself to get the votes.”
Battle of Eden was created to celebrate the depth of culinary talent across the Eden Hotel Collection. Now in its eighth year, the event continues to highlight the creativity and passion of the chefs behind the restaurants at Bovey Castle, Mallory Court Hotel and Spa, The Arden Hotel, Brockencote Hall Hotel and The Greenway Hotel and Spa.
Mark Chambers, Managing Director at Eden Hotel Collection, said:
“Each dish was a showstopper in its own right, so I must congratulate everybody who took part.
The evening underlined the exceptional talent we have across our hotels. Our chefs are not only creating outstanding dishes but also showcasing the artistic side of the profession, which plays an important role in inspiring the next generation of culinary talent.”
From playful storytelling on the plate to theatrical presentations and bold flavours, Battle of Eden 2026 once again demonstrated the creativity that defines the kitchens across the Eden Hotel Collection.
