The history of the coronation
Coronation ceremonies are a 700 year old tradition that have stood the test of time. This tradition is steeped in the idea of monarchical and regal power being officially recognised and appointed, and includes the physical placement or bestowal of a crown upon a monarch’s head. The monarch must take the Coronation Oath, in which they swear to govern over the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth Realms.
Over the years, coronation ceremonies have evolved and modernised to keep up with the changing times, however the meaning and importance of the big day has remained the same. As for the King’s coronation, the Royal’s have made an official statement confirming that the ceremony will “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in long standing traditions and pageantry.”
